An Extra Second Tonight

Hello there. Well, I'm back from Nebraska. Back to the blog.

Did you know that we all get an extra second tonight just before midnight. Here is the explanation from cnn.com

**Immediately before midnight a leap second -- the first for three years -- will be added to atomic clocks around the world by official timekeepers.

Peter Whibberley, a senior research scientist at Britain's National Physical Laboratory, said the Earth's erratic rotation meant an extra second needed to be added.

"The difference between atomic time and Earth time has now built up to the point where it needs to be corrected, so this New Year's Eve we will experience a rare 61 second minute at the very end of 2008 and revelers... will have an extra second to celebrate."

Whibberley told British media anyone sober enough and who had a digital clock that picked up leap second information from a reliable source, would see the final seconds of 2008 as 57, 58, 59, 60, 00 -- with 60 being the extra second**

The morning show is off tomorrow the 1st. Then Johnny will do the show by himself on Friday and I will fill in for Maria from 9am-2pm.

Enjoy the day. Thanks for stopping by.

Santa Claus listens to our long lists

Santa was at Maxim Honda with us when we gave away the ATV last Saturday. I think he was exhausted after listening to Maria's wish list! He told us that his favorite cookie was the snickerdoodle.

I'm not sure where Johnny was while we were talking to Santa... maybe outside having another hot dog.

Merry Christmas!

Help for McKinney Family

KLAK wanted to pass along this information. A bereavement fund has been set up to help the Burdick family. Their 4 year old son was killed in a car accident on 380 and Lake Forrest Sunday night. Here is a copy of the story from McKinney News.net

**A tragic accident at Lake Forest and Hwy. 380 Sunday night has claimed the life of a four-year-old McKinney boy.

Amber Burdick was driving her three children - Andrew (7), Brett and Danielle (2) - and turning northbound onto Lake Forest from 380 when her vehicle was broadsided by another vehicle, according to McKinney Fire Department assistant chief Frank Roma.

Brett reportedly suffered the direct impact of the crash and was knocked unconscious. He was transported to Medical Center of McKinney but was not able to regain the ability to breathe on his own. Brett passed away at 2:47 a.m. on Monday.

Andrew was flown by emergency helicopter to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas where doctors inserted pins into his right leg in an attempt to piece his shin back together. According to those who have spoken with the family, Andrew went into surgery again Tuesday morning. His leg injury is believed to be more severe than first thought as he lost quite a bit of skin on the leg and is going to require skin grafts/plastic surgery in the near future. Andrew is expected to be in the hospital for more than a week. He is said to have no memory of the accident.

Amber and Danielle are bruised but suffered no major injuries from the accident.

A bereavement account has been set up in Brett’s name at Wells Fargo Bank. Anyone wishing to donate money to this account can go into any Wells Fargo anywhere in the United States and say they are making a donation for Brett Burdick and mention it is a bereavement account. All money donated to this account will be given to Chris and Amber Burdick. In addition, toys for the children can be donated. There are four Wells Fargo locations in McKinney.

All well wishes for Andrew can be sent Children’s Medical Hospital, Room C4-279, 1935 Medical District Dr., Dallas 75235.**

We've been told that Andrew will have another surgery on Friday 12/12/08.

The Clueless Guy's Gift-Giving Guide

It's that time of the year again. Guys-what are you going to buy for your gal?

Here are a few tips for you that we found on msn lifestyle:

Listen and Ye Shall Receive

We did some sleuthing among members of the best (and toughest) focus group of all: newlywed women. They unanimously agreed that the key to stellar gift giving is simple: it's called listening. Women want to avoid a bad present as much as you do and most of us start dropping hints a few months before the holidays. So start paying attention. If you're watching TV together, don't fast-forward through the commercials. Pick up on subtle clues like when she says "Ooh, those new Nanos look so cool. I really wish I had a green one." If you're walking through a mall or shopping district, chances are gift suggestions will pop up at random as she lingers over that leather bag or those handmade chandelier earrings. And don't be afraid to drop hints about items you'd like to receive — gift-giving street is a two-way, after all.

Just Ask Her

Remember the year you got her a Showtime Rotisserie Grill? We know, the infomercial is engrossing, but that doesn't mean it should be purchased, least of all for your wife (but you know that now). Before you wander off into uncharted territory again, find out what she really wants. One Nest editor's husband recently asked and was pleasantly pleased at her response. She said she wants a flat screen TV so that she can watch college football games in all their glory — a score for both parties! So don't be afraid to just come out and ask her. Her top-pick could be your ideal present too.

Seek Outside Help

All women have a confidante who knows their deepest and darkest desires (read: Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch). Ask her mother, sister, brother or best friend if she's said anything about what she wants for the holidays. You'll get bonus points for doing extra research and planning ahead. Plus, if she doesn't like it, you have someone else to share the blame with! Also look for online helpers. She may have a "Wish List" on sites like Amazon.com or Bluefly.com — you'll hit the jackpot with just a few clicks

Don't Go Crazy

All the members of our focus group agreed: the wrong present is not a deal breaker. You can't pick out a winner every time and women understand that. "I have three brothers, and I know what trauma men suffer when they're forced to shop, so I'm very open minded about what I get," one Nestie remarked. We hate to be cliché, but it really is the thought that counts. So any gesture that shows thought and effort beyond walking into a store, pointing at the first thing you see and having the salesperson wrap it up is our idea of a great gift. If she doesn't realize that, maybe you're not the clueless one after all

Tips from John Tesh

Good Morning. Many of you listen to John Tesh 7 nights a week here on 97.5 KLAK.
He also has a great website... www.tesh.com

Here are some tips for holiday eating from his site.

Avoid the "Seasonal Seven"

The holidays are upon us. So it’s time to beware of the “seasonal seven” – the seven pounds the average person gains between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Still, it’s possible to enjoy the holidays – and the parties - without packing on the pounds. Here are a few tips, courtesy of MSNBC.

First, don’t tell yourself, “It’s okay, it’s the holidays” because that opens the door to six weeks of splurging. Instead, when you hit the party circuit, wear your snuggest clothes to discourage overeating and concentrate on the social part of the evening instead of the food and drink.

Then, it may sound obvious, but don’t stand near the food. A study found that obese people stand or sit 16 feet closer to the buffet than normal-weight people. They’re also 77% less likely to browse the buffet before filling their plate. So, pick three or four unusual foods, take a small serving of each, and don’t come back for seconds.

Another way to avoid the seasonal seven: Exercise every day, no matter what. Even 10 minutes can burn off a little stress and maybe half a cookie. Your best bet: Hit the treadmill in the a.m. Studies show that 75% of people who work out in the morning stick with it, but just 25% of after-work exercisers keep at it because by the end of the day, too many excuses pop up.

Eat your five-a-day fruits and veggies before you start on the holiday treats. When you fill up on healthy food with plenty of fiber, you’re less tempted by processed sugar, which will help you avoid the sugar highs and lows.

Avoid temptation. Don’t walk through the break room 10 times a day when you know it’s full of holiday treats. Before a party, eat a healthy snack with a little protein. Protein takes longer to digest, so you’ll still feel full when you get to the party.

Finally, remember that liquid calories count. One eggnog or specialty coffee can have as many calories a as personal pan-pizza. Studies show that people who drink liquid calories don’t reduce the amount of food they eat to compensate. In fact, liquid calories are more fattening because they take less energy to digest. Keep this in mind: To burn off just one regular soda, you’d have to walk for one hour and 18 minutes.

Happy Holiday eating y'all!

Free Soda

Good Morning. Happy Friday.

Make sure you get your free soda this weekend. Here is the story about the promise that Dr. Pepper made.

**Dr Pepper is making good on its promise of free soda now that the release of Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" is a reality.

The soft-drink maker said in March that it would give a free soda to everyone in America if the album dropped in 2008. "Chinese Democracy," infamously delayed since recording began in 1994, goes on sale Sunday.

"We never thought this day would come," Tony Jacobs, Dr Pepper's vice president of marketing, said in a statement. "But now that it's here, all we can say is: The Dr Pepper's on us."

Beginning Sunday at 12:01 a.m., coupons for a free 20-ounce soda will be available for 24 hours on Dr Pepper's Web site. They'll be honored until Feb. 28.**

Quarterback Club Auction

The Celina Quarterback Club is gearing up for its 34th annual auction at 5 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Celina Middle School cafeteria.

The club has served the needs of all Celina athletic programs for more than 55 years. The auction is the club’s biggest fund-raiser.

This year’s event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Attendees will be treated to a gourmet hamburger dinner at 5 p.m. All the side dishes will be contributed by some of Dallas’ top chefs.

The live auction will begin at 7. Organizers encourage attendees to arrive early because this event normally produces a very large crowd.

One hundred percent of the proceeds go toward many types of support. Over the years, the club has provided scorer tables, scoreboards, equipment and more to youth involved in Celina athletics.

Tickets for the auction and meal are $10 per person, and can be purchased at Bobkat Kuntry, Celina Sports and Texas Star Bank.

Think Pink Event at McKinney North

This morning we made McKinney North our Local Star of the Day. They are doing a wonderful event tomorrow to help support a teacher who is battling breast cancer. Here are the details.

**McKinney North High School student council will be hosting a Think Pink Event on Wednesday. It will be an assembly starting at 11a.m. with the entire student body and staff involved.

The event is to honor Dina Devoe, one of our teachers. She has been an employee of MISD for over 20 years. Dina is battling breast cancer and the students came up with some ideas to raise money to show her our support.

Last Saturday, Student Council and HOSA students participated in a Sonic carhop that raised $2,500. The past two weeks students have participated in a contest were teachers and principals have been teamed up and students have given money to containers that represent the teams, the one with the most money will have their head shaved in support of Dina.

A local salon has offered to come up and shave the heads of teachers at the assembly. We also have several students donating their hair to Locks of Love. On that Wednesday, students are shaving their heads and wearing wigs to show support, and everyone will be wearing pink.

Jostens has offered to match donations in the principal’s container to show its support, as well.

The students and staff have really pulled together to show support. Overall we are thinking we have raised around $5,000 to give to Dinae to help her with expenses.

For more information, contact Casie Home at McKinney North High School at 469-742-4300

Baby Name Trends for 2008

Good Morning. Welcome to Wednesday.

I found this online this morning and thought it was interesting. The article talks about the latest trends in baby names. If you are having a baby soon, maybe you can get some ideas here.

I've always been a fan of the traditional names but, some of the newer names are cool. I like the idea of using a last name as a first. I think Cooper is a cool first name. My mom named me after her great-great-great grandparents last name which was O'Carey. I'm glad she dropped the O!

2 Sure Things at Halloween

Hey there. Thanks for stopping by today. This is an interesting story we found today. There are two professions that keep busy around Halloween. Here's the story:

*Busy plumbers and busy orthodontists. People carving pumpkins tend to put the pumpkin brains down the garbage disposal where the seeds and stringy stuff clog up everything. This keeps 'joe plumber' busy.
Orthodontists usually have their hands full the day after Halloween with all those broken or damaged braces dislodged by chewy candy. There are also various dentists around the country who are either buying back your candy (usually at $1 per pound) or accepting contributions of excess candy to send to the troops overseas. *

I'm actually going to try to NOT eat Halloween candy this year. It's going to be hard though because I love chocolate and I love Candy Corn. What's your Halloween weakness?

The Love List

Hi there.

Here is a story we found at Oprah.com today... Was it coincidence or magic? Alice Gorman wrote 100 things she wanted in a man, and buried the list in a closet. And then, oddly enough, a man who matched the list almost exactly strolled into her life. Seriously, people, how did that happen?

Click here to read the whole story.

Many of our listeners told us about their "love lists" and how they really work! Have you ever made a "love list?" I'm working on mine right now. Maria already has the man of her dreams and I don't think Johnny was really paying attention to this part of the show.

Carrie's Home for Wayward Dogs

Well, if you listen at all you know that I am an animal lover. This week, in addition to my dog Jack, there are 2 more dogs in my house. I'm dog sitting for Skippy and Chewie. Skippy is an older sweet girl who sleeps most of the day. Chewie is a 5 month old Shih Tzu who never sleeps.

I'm sure he got his name because he chews on everything... especially toes, socks and shoes. Luckily, his teeth are tiny. He broke his leg recently and has a cast on but, he can still outrun Jack to the back door.

He also steals Jack's food and chews on Jack's blanket. (if Jack was writing this blog, it wouldn't be pretty I'm sure)

But, I will tell you this-If you ever have a bad day and need a smile... Just hold a puppy for a few minutes. It does the trick every time.

Do not forward this blog

Good Morning.

Yesterday I got another one of those annoying chain emails that threatens you with bad luck if you don't forward it. First of all, if any of my friends are reading this, please stop forwarding those things to me. I NEVER forward them. But, then I got to thinking, maybe my flat tire last month was because I didn't send the "save the kittens in South America" email.

All of our listeners agreed that they are dumb and shouldn't be sent... so who the heck is starting these things?

If you really have to send one of them here is Johnny's email address.

Marcia Marcia Marcia

Hey gang. Did you see that Maureen McCormick has written an auto-biography. I can't wait to read it. Although, I always kind of related to middle child, Jan.

Here's some info: Maureen McCormick, the young actress who portrayed her, was living a very different—and not-so-wonderful—life. Now, for the very first time, Maureen tells the shocking and inspirational true story of the beloved teen generations have invited into their living rooms—and the woman she became.

Maureen takes us behind the scenes of America's favorite television family, the Bradys. With poignancy and candor, she reveals the lifelong friendships, the hurtful jealousies, the offscreen romance, the loving support her television family provided during a life-or-death moment, and the inconsolable loss of a man who had been a second father. But The Brady Bunch was only the beginning. Haunted by the perfection of her television alter ego, Maureen landed on the dark side, caught up in a fast-paced, drug-fueled, star-studded Hollywood existence that ultimately led to the biggest battle of her life.

After kicking her drug habit, Maureen battled depression, reconnected with her mother, whom she nursed through the end of her life, and then found herself in a pitched battle for her family in which she ultimately triumphed.

This morning we talked to Johnny's mom-the Swami Mommy. She chose the Baltimore Ravens for tonight's MNF winner. She is 2-0 so far. Listen every Monday morning at about 8:40 for B's mom. She's so much fun.

Maria was very happy this morning because her Redskins beat the Cowboys. We let her have her moment. ;)

Have a great Monday.
