Want to Improve Your Marriage? Get a Dog!

Want to improve your marriage? Get a dog! According to psychologist and couples’ counselor Dr. Ian Kerner, numerous studies show that having a dog in the house can increase closeness and intimacy.

  • For example: Having a dog around encourages touching and hugging. Studies show that petting a dog increases production of the “cuddle hormone” oxytocin, which also boosts trust and feelings of connection between couples. That’ll make you and your spouse more touchy-feely.
  • A dog in the house also boosts happiness. A recent study in Japan found that dogs can tell whether a person is smiling or not. Since dogs love smiles and laughter, they tend to get playful to make sure it happens. That helps humans, because studies show that the more people smile, the happier they feel. In fact, relationship therapist John Gottman points out that the couples in successful marriages have a lot more positive moments than negative ones, and a dog can assist with that.
  • Dogs also make their owners more likely to exercise. Studies show that people who walk dogs regularly are more active across the board than those who don’t have dogs. Numerous studies show that exercise increases health and happiness, and reduces stress. All of those things improve your relationships.
  • The final reason a dog can improve your marriage: Novelty. Humans seek “newness,” which increases production of the “feel good” chemical dopamine. Walking your dog will help you meet new people and new dogs. It’ll also make you more likely to stop and see things you might never see flying by in your car. The more feel-good chemicals in your system, the more likely you are to like the people around you, including your spouse.

Maroon 5 in Dallas Feb. 5th

Just read about this today on DirectTV's website:

DIRECTV's beachfront property in Victory Park will become the most coveted piece of Dallas real estate — aside from Cowboys Stadium — when fans descend on "Big D" for Super Bowl Weekend.

That's where one million pounds of sand, A-list celebrities, NFL athletes and thousands of spectators will converge on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, for DIRECTV's Fifth Annual Celebrity Beach Bowl, presented by SPIKE HD. DIRECTV is taking over Victory Park and transforming it into a massive custom-made stadium, complete with a sand-filled football field and concert stage, constructed especially for the event, which is free and open to the public.

The game and performance will air live on DIRECTV's The 101 Network and, for the first time ever, will also be broadcast in 3D on DIRECTV's n3D powered by Panasonic. Additionally, the game will be broadcast on all of Fox Sports Network's Regional Sports Networks and affiliates and DIRECTV's Regional Sports Networks, more than twenty-five networks in total, giving the DIRECTV Celebrity Beach Bowl its biggest audience ever of more than 85 million homes.

Everything is bigger in Texas and this year's Fifth Annual DIRECTV Celebrity Beach Bowl, which has become one of the must-attend events of Super Bowl weekend, will be no exception. The entertainment world's hottest celebrities, along with current and former NFL athletes, will compete head to head in an exhilarating matchup in front of thousands of fervent fans. Immediately following the game and trophy presentation, the crowd will fill the beach for a concert featuring Maroon 5, presented by Palladia HD.

The day will begin at 1:30 p.m. ET/PT with pre-game show hosted by Dan Patrick and Kevin Frazier, presented by SHOWTIME. At 2:30 p.m. the game will begin when celebrities and athletes take the field. The DIRECTV Celebrity Beach Bowl will be played over two, 20-minute halves and the action will be called by Patrick, entertainment reporter Nancy O'Dell and sideline reporter Tony Siragusa. The DIRECTV Blimp will be flying overhead to add to the excitement.
