Want to improve your marriage? Get a dog! According to psychologist and couples’ counselor Dr. Ian Kerner, numerous studies show that having a dog in the house can increase closeness and intimacy.

For example: Having a dog around encourages touching and hugging. Studies show that petting a dog increases production of the “cuddle hormone” oxytocin, which also boosts trust and feelings of connection between couples. That’ll make you and your spouse more touchy-feely.
A dog in the house also boosts happiness. A recent study in Japan found that dogs can tell whether a person is smiling or not. Since dogs love smiles and laughter, they tend to get playful to make sure it happens. That helps humans, because studies show that the more people smile, the happier they feel. In fact, relationship therapist John Gottman points out that the couples in successful marriages have a lot more positive moments than negative ones, and a dog can assist with that.
Dogs also make their owners more likely to exercise. Studies show that people who walk dogs regularly are more active across the board than those who don’t have dogs. Numerous studies show that exercise increases health and happiness, and reduces stress. All of those things improve your relationships.
The final reason a dog can improve your marriage: Novelty. Humans seek “newness,” which increases production of the “feel good” chemical dopamine. Walking your dog will help you meet new people and new dogs. It’ll also make you more likely to stop and see things you might never see flying by in your car. The more feel-good chemicals in your system, the more likely you are to like the people around you, including your spouse.

McKinney Family YMCA My Challenge Community Service Project

Saturday November 6^th 11am-1pm

Collin County Meals on Wheels serves homebound seniors in our area. Each day, homebound seniors look forward to a meal and a personal visit from volunteers. In past years, meals were delivered by the police department on Thanksgiving Day. This year, due to budget cut backs, the police department will not be able to deliver their meals. Meals on Wheels will be delivering items prior to Thanksgiving Day to brighten their holiday. The McKinney YMCA volunteers would like to help in this effort by providing the needed items. In addition, many seniors only companionship is there pet, so the YMCA will also be accepting pet food donations as well. Thanks to a generous donor, Meals on Wheels just received dog food. However, many seniors have cats, and Meals on Wheels would appreciate donations of dry cat food.

Collin County Teen Court has selected 20 teens who will be participating in their service project at the YMCA. They will be collecting and organizing needed donations and making gift boxes for the seniors. Please help us make Thanksgiving Day a special day for our seniors.

Drop off donations on Saturday November 6^th between 11am-1pm

MHS Royal Pride March-a-thon

THE McKinney High School Royal Pride Band will hit the streets and raise funds for the 2010-2011 year. The 8th Annual Royal Pride March-a-thon is Saturday August 14th. On tap this year are the retro tunes, “Give Me Some Lovin” and “Any Way You Want It”.

Students will be marching to raise funds for their individual accounts which pay band fees for the year and their out of state Spring Competition trip. While the final destination for the MHS Spring Competition trip isn't locked down, New York, Washington D. C. and San Francisco are the leading contenders. Students are out and about right now taking pledges. They will be working extremely hard to fill commitments in order to cover the costs for competing in one of these cities. Please consider supporting these students as they strive for excellence through competition.
The day starts @ 8:00 a.m. in the MHS parking lot and stops at Tom Thumb and Market Street for mini-concerts and review. Route details are as follows. After departing MHS The Royal Pride Band crosses under I-75 onto Valley Creek Trail and begins the trek uphill to Sunny Meadow, Kensington, Provine and Hardin Roads. They continue to White Wing, La Paloma, Creekridge, back to White Wing and then to Doe Run. The final lap of the route is Quail Hollow back to Hardin, across Eldorado to Tom Thumb on Eldorado Parkway.

Tom Thumb is the site of the band's first concert & flag review. It is also a most welcome place to refill with life sustaining water. The R.P.B. is again thankful for the generosity of Market Street in providing this year's lunch stop and final mini-concert performance opportunity between 12 – 1pm.

Here is some info on Oprah's campaign to get people to stop texting while driving...

*As a kick-off to May's National Youth Traffic Safety Month, Oprah Winfrey is taking a stand on cell phone use by drivers. In cities around the country and on a live broadcast on April 30, Oprah is launching a public service campaign called "No Phone Zone Day" to honor victims of distracted drivers while also educating drivers on the risks and dangers of driving while texting and using cell phones.

The events on Friday include a call to action. Drivers are asked to sign a pledge stating that they will not drive and text. Oprah started this push a few months ago, and there are other efforts being made to make it illegal to text and drive.To date, more than 160,000 people have signed the pledge.

The sobering fact is that in the U.S., over 5,000 young people are killed in automobile crashes every year, making it the number one cause of death.

"A call or text isn't worth taking a life," said Winfrey. "We must not allow more mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, sisters and brothers to die before we take action against distracted driving. Let's put a stop to it now, by joining together on April 30 for national 'No Phone Zone Day', and by making our cars a 'No Phone Zone.'"

"I've made it my mission at the DOT to end distracted driving. We know that if we can get people to put away cell phones and other electronic devices when they are behind the wheel, we can save thousands of lives and prevent hundreds of thousands of injuries every year" said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood. "That's why I'm proud to support and participate in Oprah's 'No Phone Zone Day.'"

(Babies go on their backs, not their bellies.)"

New baby at the Dallas Zoo

Johnny and I are giving away tickets to the Dallas Zoo. Here's a cool new animal now at the zoo. It's called an OKAPI. I've never heard of them but they look awesome.

From Dallas Morning News: Askari, the baby okapi born in December, started exploring his habitat at the Dallas Zoo this week.
As he is only three months old, he spends at least half the day in his barn but when he does venture out, he is curious and active, said zoo officials.
Askari, which means "warrior" in Swahili, can be seen along the Nature Trail in the Wilds of Africa.
The Dallas Zoo has an okapi breeding program; about 20 percent of okapi in zoos in the U.S. and Japan can trace their lineage back to the Dallas Zoo.

* Take 800 steps. Dr. Evangeline Lausier is a clinical professor of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine. She says that a moderately brisk walk, which is a pace of about 100 steps per minute, is an excellent way to get blood flowing to your heart and brain. This also triggers the release of endorphins – brain chemicals that make you feel alert and energetic. If you can, walk outdoors. The sun provides mood-enhancing vitamin D, even on cloudy days.
* Wake up your nose – and the rest of you will follow. Smells stimulate the brain’s “olfactory” center, and heightens awareness of your surroundings. Rabbit thinks he's a dog

Here's a cute story that I saw in the Daily Mail today.

A pet rabbit has had an identity crisis after spending too much time with the family cocker spaniel and now believes he is a dog.
The Giant Poobah rabbit - also named Poobah - has gone barking mad and spends hours cuddled up with spaniel puppy Scout in his dog basket.
He has also started rejecting his green food and will only eat treats bought for Scout - including his wet dog food.

The confused rabbit has copied Scout's behavior to such an extent that he even gets up on his hind legs and begs for snacks. But Poobah has asserted himself as top-dog in the house and is piling on the weight from all the dog biscuits he is eating.

The three-year-old rabbit first began adopting the canine behaviour after Scout was introduced to the family home in Perranporth, near Newquay, Cornwall, eight months ago.

Polar Bear Waves

After nearly a dozen visits to the Philadelphia Zoo, photographer Michael S. Confer had almost given up on getting a photo of swimming polar bears, but then he pulled off a stunner: an amazing shot of a polar bear named Coldilocks giving him a wave, reports the Telegraph.

A longtime member of the Philadelphia Zoo, Confer, 39, decided last year that he would try to take a photo of the polar bears swimming in their exhibit. With the magnificent bears' recent addition to the endangered species list, Confer thought the photograph would be timely. "The zoo is about 10 minutes from our house and every month, my wife and I would take our daughter for a visit," Confer explains to Paw Nation.

Once at the zoo, he'd always make a beeline for the polar bear exhibit, but Confer never saw the polar bears swim. "They're supposed to spend the majority of their life in the pool, and I can't even see 'em take a quick dip," Confer remembers. "They were always laying around sleeping."

Last November, on his 10th visit to the zoo in quest of his polar bear photograph, Confer got lucky. "I was walking away from the polar bear exhibit when I heard my wife yell my name," Confer tells Paw Nation. The photographer ran back to the polar bear exhibit, where -- finally!-- one of the polar bears had jumped into the pool.

"She [Coldilocks the polar bear] was swimming in big counter-clockwise circles around the pool," Confer says. Quickly, he placed the lens of his camera right up against the glass and began firing off shots on his camera -- about 3 to 4 frames per second. "I couldn't tilt my camera up or down, or else there would be glare from the glass," Confer explains.

The bear glided around the pool, batting at a ball and swimming in languid circles. "She'd go out of my sight and come back," says Confer. "She seemed curious and would swim back towards me."

Then Coldilocks shocked Confer with a delightful and unusual maneuver. "She swam right up, floating about four feet above in the tank, then she just let herself go and slowly dropped to the bottom of the aquarium," Confer says. "As she dropped, her left paw just slowly came up." The bear's right paw, says Confer, remained down.

Was Coldilocks really waving at the photographer? "I'm not sure if she was waving at me," says Confer. "But it sure felt like it."

Character Counts Week at Vega Elementary

Hello. This morning I got to visit Vega Elementary in McKinney.

It is "character counts" week. The kids are learning to be good people and good citizens. They heard from speakers this week tell them about Caring, Responsibility and Respect.

My talk today was about Fairness.

I had a great time and the kids were all wonderful. Thanks to the all the teachers and to the principal, Wendy Tiemann for making my visit so much fun.

Johnny got his flu shot!

Thanks to Amy and Steve from MedPro Pharmacy in Melissa for coming in Monday morning and giving everyone their seasonal flu shots. Johnny had his done on the air and got a very cool Scooby Doo Band-Aid. He said it didn't hurt at all.

The Centers for Disease Control say the following people should get the shot.

Who Should Get Vaccinated
It is recommended by ACIP that certain people should get vaccinated each year. They are either people who are at high risk of having serious seasonal flu-related complications or people who live with or care for those at high risk for serious seasonal flu-related complications. During flu seasons when vaccine supplies are limited or delayed, ACIP makes recommendations regarding priority groups for vaccination.

People who should get the seasonal vaccine each year are:

1.Children aged 6 months up to their 19th birthday
2.Pregnant women
3.People 50 years of age and older
4.People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions
5.People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
6.People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu, including:
a.Health care workers
b.Household contacts of persons at high risk for complications from the flu
c.Household contacts and out of home caregivers of children less than 6 months of age (these children are too young to be vaccinated

Science-Based Laws of Attraction

The laws of attraction are based around science. It’s not a very romantic notion – but knowing some of the subconscious reasons we’re attracted to one person over another could help you find the love of your life. Here’s your chemistry lesson, courtesy of Women’s Health magazine.

•First off, you’re more likely to pair up with someone who’s just as attractive as you are. According to Dr. Helen Fisher, who wrote the book Why Him? Why Her?, people tend to be drawn to others on their same physical level – think Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Why? The reason isn’t very romantic – but it’s the truth: Subconsciously, we want to be successful in love. We want to pair off, and we know if we choose someone who’s on our level, we’re less likely to get rejected.

•We’re subconsciously attracted to people who have similar sounding names. Why? Dr. Kevin Hogan wrote the book Irresistible Attraction and he says it’s because we’re conditioned to like what feels familiar. So you’ll often find couples with sound-alike names, or similar initials. If you don’t, couples will often give each other sound-alike pet names. Maybe he calls her bunny and she calls him bear. That can achieve the same bonding effect.

•We’re also attracted to people who share our quirky habits. If on your first date you discover that you both love anchovies but hate mushrooms on your pizza, bam! Chemistry. Why? According to Dr. Hogan, we admire people who mirror our idiosyncrasies. We feel they understand us and it creates an instant bond.

•We’re drawn to people we want be like. We’re attracted to people who have traits we admire – but may lack. Why? Dr. Pepper Schwartz is a sociology professor at the University of Washington, and she says it’s because they keep us balanced. So a wall flower may be more attracted to a social butterfly. The positive trait that you admire in your partner often rubs off on you.
